Bear, the stylish note-taking app, appears on first sight to be superfluous to most people's needs.
It’s available only for iOS and Mac, which come pre-installed with their own perfectly efficient equivalent, Notes. Plus, Evernote has already cornered the market for those who need more organisational features than Notes can handle.
Once you try it, though, it’s hard not to fall in love with the app’s intuitive design. Its developer Shiny Frog has really committed to optimising every detail, its team members are active in answering questions about the product online and even its social media feeds are snappily written.
Rather than using folders, like Notes, Bear organises users’ writing with hashtags, meaning each note can be sorted into multiple categories. Checkboxes, bullet points and ticks can be added to list items on the iPhone app simply by typing a hyphen, asterisk or plus sign at the beginning of the line, and it’s also very easy to add hyperlinks, format text in a range of styles and even link notes to other notes, as if you were building a wiki.
The app is targeted at all kinds of users, but it may be most appealing to those who write frequently for blogs or busy social media accounts, especially those who switch devices often during their day. While it functions well for jotting memos to oneself, it can also be used to compose complicated content, with images and links embedded. You can also attach almost any type of file to a note, including .zip archives and videos. There are word counts, character counts and an estimated reading time for the text, as well as a focus mode for banishing distractions.
Bear isn’t flawless. Playing a video can make it crash, individual notes can’t be locked behind a password or Touch ID, links don’t automatically turn into “rich previews” with a thumbnail image and description, and you can’t (yet) allow friends to collaborate on notes. But it’s a powerful free app that’s still evolving, and most persuasively of all, it’s a pleasure to use.

Shiny Frog is a small, young team based in Parma, Italy, who’ve been designing pretty iOS and Mac apps since 2005. They launched the public beta version of Bear in Jun 2016.
What’s the feedback been like?
Glowing. Apple chose Bear as its top Mac app of 2016, and it’s been described by one tester as “like a moleskine for the computer age”.
How do users format notes?
Bear uses an intuitive markup language based on CommonMark: an asterisk or a slash either side of a word, for example, will make it bold or italic.
Can I add notes that I’ve stored elsewhere?
Yes, you can import an Evernote archive or text files into Bear, although you may have to tweak some of the compatibility settings to preserve the formatting.
Is there a premium service?
Yes, while the free service is great, there’s also an affordable premium option. For US$1.49 monthly or $14.99 per year, you can unlock advanced features, including automatic syncing across all devices, application themes and the ability to export finished pieces as HTML, PDF, DOCX, JPEG and other file types.
How does it do on privacy?
The company says it doesn’t sell on personal information.

What is the definition of an SME?
SMEs in the UAE are defined by the number of employees, annual turnover and sector. Types of fraud
Phishing: Fraudsters send an unsolicited email that appears to be from a financial institution or online retailer. The hoax email requests that you provide sensitive information, often by clicking on to a link leading to a fake website.

Prize scams: Fraudsters claiming to be authorised representatives from well-known organisations (such as Etisalat, du, Dubai Shopping Festival, Expo2020, Lulu Hypermarket etc) contact victims to tell them they have won a cash prize and request them to share confidential banking details to transfer the prize money.

What is an ETF?
An exchange traded fund is a type of investment fund that can be traded quickly and easily, just like stocks and shares. They come with no upfront costs aside from your brokerage's dealing charges and annual fees, which are far lower than on traditional mutual investment funds. Charges are as low as 0.03 per cent on one of the very cheapest (and most popular), Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, with the maximum around 0.75 per cent.
There is no fund manager deciding which stocks and other assets to invest in, instead they passively track their chosen index, country, region or commodity, regardless of whether it goes up or down.
The first ETF was launched as recently as 1993, but the sector boasted $5.78 billion in assets under management at the end of September as inflows hit record highs, according to the latest figures from ETFGI, a leading independent research and consultancy firm.
There are thousands to choose from, with the five largest providers BlackRock’s iShares, Vanguard, State Street Global Advisers, Deutsche Bank X-trackers and Invesco PowerShares.

There are numerous success stories of teen businesses that were created in college dorm rooms and other modest circumstances. Below are some of the most recognisable names in the industry:
- Facebook: Mark Zuckerberg and his friends started Facebook when he was a 19-year-old Harvard undergraduate.
- Dell: When Michael Dell was an undergraduate student at Texas University in 1984, he started upgrading computers for profit. He starting working full-time on his business when he was 19. Eventually, his company became the Dell Computer Corporation and then Dell Inc.
- Subway: Fred DeLuca opened the first Subway restaurant when he was 17. In 1965, Mr DeLuca needed extra money for college, so he decided to open his own business. Top New Zealand cop on policing the virtual world
New Zealand police began closer scrutiny of social media and online communities after the attacks on two mosques in March, the country's top officer said.
The killing of 51 people in Christchurch and wounding of more than 40 others shocked the world. Brenton Tarrant, a suspected white supremacist, was accused of the killings. His trial is ongoing and he denies the charges.
Mike Bush, commissioner of New Zealand Police, said officers looked closely at how they monitored social media in the wake of the tragedy to see if lessons could be learned.
“We decided that it was fit for purpose but we need to deepen it in terms of community relationships, extending them not only with the traditional community but the virtual one as well," he told The National.
"We want to get ahead of attacks like we suffered in New Zealand so we have to challenge ourselves to be better."
