My Favorite Albums: Paul Oakenfold

Before his performance at XL Beach Club, English DJ and producer  Paul Oakenfold speaks of the five records that inspired him.

Marvin Gaye: What’s Going On (1971)

This is one of the most outstanding albums ever. The lyrical content was written in the 70s but is still relevant to today.

Happy Mondays: Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches (1990)

This to me was an album where the moment was right, the sound was perfect and it all worked even with it being a challenge to merge electronic music with indie guitars.

NWA: Straight Out of Compton (1988)

This is my favorite all time hip-hop album. The energy and the way they used samples just took hip hop to the next level.

Bob Marley: Exodus (1976)

When this came out it was a breath of fresh air, it was really original and the songs were great.

U2: Zooropa (1993)

I really enjoyed this album, they incorporated electronic sounds and they weren’t scared to challenge themselves as a band.

Paul Oakenfold is playing at XL Beach Club on February 22. Tickets are Dh150 from
