Jimmy Fallon to host Golden Globes

Comedian Jimmy Fallon, host of US TV chat show The Tonight Show, will host the next year's Golden Globe Awards. It will be the 41-year-old's first time hosting the ceremony. He follows British comedian Ricky Gervais, who took the reins for the fourth time this year, and comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who did the honours from 2013 to 2015. The ceremony will take place on January 8 in Beverly Hills, broadcast live on NBC television. Fallon said on Twitter he was excited to be hosting the event, one of the biggest in the Hollywood awards season. "And I'm really looking forward to spending time with the Hollywood Foreign Press before Donald Trump has them all deported," he joked, in a dig at the Republican presidential nominee's pledge to crack down on immigration if elected in November. Fallon, a former cast member of US TV sketch show Saturday Night Live, took over NBC's flagship late-night talk show in 2014, and it currently tops the ratings in its category. – Reuters

Salman Khan has urged his fans to watch Akshay Kumar's new film Rustom. Khan shared a video on Twitter in which he asked fans see the movie, which is due out in the UAE on August 11. Rustom is based on the true story of Indian Navy officer Commander K M Nanavati, who shot dead his wife's lover but was pardoned. The film, which carries the tag line "3 shots that shocked the nation", reunites Kumar with director Neeraj Pandey, after they worked together on the 2015 film Baby. – IANS

Dishoom star denies Dhoni cameo rumours

Actor John Abraham, who is wowing audiences with his action-packed role in movie Dishoom, which was largely filmed in Abu Dhabi, has denied rumours he will have a cameo in the upcoming film M S Dhoni - The Untold Story. "No, not true at all. I don't know what is happening," he said. Directed by Neeraj Pandey, M S Dhoni - The Untold Story is a biopic about cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni, due out on September 30 in India. It stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the title role, along withAnupam Kher, Bhoomika Chawla, Kiara Advani, Herry Tangri and Disha Patani. – IANS

Splash remake gets Ghostbusters-style gender swap

Splash, the 1980s romantic comedy about a mermaid (Darryl Hannah) who falls in love with a human (Tom Hanks), is to follow in Ghostbusters' footsteps with a remake that reverses the genders of the main characters. Channing Tatum will star as a merman, and Jillian Bell – who starred with Tatum on 22 Jump Street – will play the human role, according to Deadline. Disney reportedly has a production and writing team in place, including Liked writer Marja-Lewis Ryan, although the director has yet to be announced. – The National

Singer Jay Sean wants fans to know he is back on the music scene after a three-year hiatus – and more importantly, still alive. "I do understand that in this day and age if you disappear for too long, people think you actually died," the British singer and songwriter said. "People will think, 'I haven't heard his song on radio for a few years, he must be dead." After a five-year relationship with Cash Money Records, where his label mates included Lil Wayne and Drake, Sean parted with the company in 2014 amid a bitter legal dispute. "I could not talk about it. There's a lot of things we can't talk about, legally," he said. Now signed to Sony, he called the split "civil" and said there was no bad blood between him and label co-founder Bryan "Birdman" Williams. The summer release of Sean's new single, Make My Love Go, brought him back to what he loves and grew up with: pop, R&B and dance hall. Kanye West is notorious for his Twitter spats with fellow celebs, but one star who appears to have escaped his wrath is James Corden. The British host of The Late Late Show recently managed to get Michelle Obame to appear on his Carpool Karaoke segment, but West has eluded him. "Kanye has been booked to do Carpool Karaoke twice now and both times something came up," Corden the British edition of GQ magazine. "He'll do it eventually. He wants to do it. [When he cancelled he sent] about three dozen white roses, of course. Arranged in the shape of a cube. What could be more Kanye than that?"
