Timeframe: Winter storm surges of the 1960s

It’s a week that has witnessed heavy downpours across the country. So torrential was the rain it led to flash floods in Fujairah, forcing dozens from their homes. The temperature has also dropped over the past few weeks: people are wrapping up in coats and even scarves. Travel back in time to Abu Dhabi of the early 1960s and it’s a similar story. This photograph was taken around 1963 by David Riley, a English expatriate who was working here for the British Bank of the Middle East (now HSBC). It shows a winter storm surge catching recently unloaded cargo during high tide near what is now the Corniche. Back in the 1960s, cargo had to be unloaded out at sea and then brought ashore in smaller vessels. Mina Zayed was officially opened in 1972, and this way of life ended.
