Dubai Opera will host a month-long series of classical music concerts next month.

The Dubai Downtown venue will be the venue for the InClassica International Music Festival, which will take place from May 8 to June 2.

The 25-concert series will feature an eclectic array of performances, featuring 50 renowned soloists, three leading orchestras and 11 celebrated conductors.

One of the highlights of the series is a performance by Grammy Award-winning violinist Gil Shaham, from America, who will play alongside the Berlin Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, May 25.

Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say, German Music Critics' Best Recording of the Year Award winner, will be on hand to play Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 on Wednesday, May 18.

South Korean pianist, Yekwon Sunwoo, medalist of the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform a repertoire including Chopin and Debussy on Wednesday, May 11.

Vocalists will also display their talents as part of the festival.

On Thursday, May 12, Russian soprano Anna Aglatova will join the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra for a night of arias by composers Shor, Mendelssohn, Donizetti, Delibes and Lehar.

Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja will also return to Dubai on Sunday, May 15 with a packed programme of orchestral and opera favourites, including arias by Verdi and Puccini.

Another standout event will be the joint performance by two classical music stars, Russian pianist Mikhail Pletnev and Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich.

Their Monday, May 23 concert will feature four pieces by composers Dvorak, Grieg, Shor and Franck.

The series ends on Thursday, June 2 with a lavish concert featuring the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra and special guest, Japanese violinist Fumiaki Miura, for a repertoire including Shore's Phantasms for violin and orchestra and Dvorak's Symphony No.7.

All concerts will start at 8pm. Tickets cost between Dh180 to Dh255, and are available from www.dubaiopera.com. Proof of vaccination is not required for any of the festival concerts.

Torno Subito by Massimo Bottura

When the W Dubai – The Palm hotel opens at the end of this year, one of the highlights will be Massimo Bottura’s new restaurant, Torno Subito, which promises “to take guests on a journey back to 1960s Italy”. It is the three Michelinstarred chef’s first venture in Dubai and should be every bit as ambitious as you would expect from the man whose restaurant in Italy, Osteria Francescana, was crowned number one in this year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Akira Back Dubai

Another exciting opening at the W Dubai – The Palm hotel is South Korean chef Akira Back’s new restaurant, which will continue to showcase some of the finest Asian food in the world. Back, whose Seoul restaurant, Dosa, won a Michelin star last year, describes his menu as,  “an innovative Japanese cuisine prepared with a Korean accent”.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

The highly experimental chef, whose dishes are as much about spectacle as taste, opens his first restaurant in Dubai next year. Housed at The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will feature contemporary twists on recipes that date back to the 1300s, including goats’ milk cheesecake. Always remember with a Blumenthal dish: nothing is quite as it seems.

Global Fungi Facts

• Scientists estimate there could be as many as 3 million fungal species globally
• Only about 160,000 have been officially described leaving around 90% undiscovered
• Fungi account for roughly 90% of Earth's unknown biodiversity
• Forest fungi help tackle climate change, absorbing up to 36% of global fossil fuel emissions annually and storing around 5 billion tonnes of carbon in the planet's topsoil
