Construction continues around the clock on Istanbul's new third airport mega project. The official opening of the first phase of the new mega-hub is set to take place on October 29th, 2018. The first phase includes two runways, a terminal and is expected to have an annual passenger capacity of 90 million. Once all four phases of construction are completed the airport will service 100 airlines, flying to more than 350 destinations and will have an annual passenger capacity of 200 million making it the biggest air travel hub in Europe and one of the largest airports in the world. 36,000 employees are working round-the-clock on the 7,659-hectare construction zone, which has been under construction for more than three and a half years and all stages are expected to be completed by 2025 at a cost of approximately 10.2 billion euros. The airport is a centerpiece of a 15-year construction boom involving a series of mega projects under President Tayyip Erdogan, upon completion the airport will boast six runways, 165 aircraft jet bridges, four terminal buildings, hotels, a mosque, VIP lounges and have an indoor area of 16,000,000sq ft.
