'Villa robbery gang' held by Dubai Police

DUBAI // A four-man gang accused of robbing seven villas has been arrested, according to police.

The men, who are all African, are said to have sneaked through windows left open by householders before they went out.

The General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police said the gang targeted vacant villas in various parts of the emirate throughout June.

Department director Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri said an investigation into the details of the crimes and a study of the technique the gang used led to the arrests.

Maj Gen Al Mansouri added that poor security measures and negligence of villa owners made it easier for criminals to carry out the robberies. He said the home security programme set up by Dubai Police is useful in deterring such crimes. The scheme involves householders registering their properties with police, so authorities have contact details for owners.
