Police in Abu Dhabi made more than 1,200 arrests and seized 600kg of narcotics during a major drugs crackdown in the first half of the year. Officers targeted both offenders in the UAE and criminal gangs operating overseas as part of a wide-ranging force operation, called "Sniper". Brig Gen Mohammed Sohail Rashedi, acting director of the criminal security sector, said the huge drugs haul recovered led to 1,274 arrests, of both drug dealers and users. Police said they thwarted cross-border activities spearheaded by criminals based abroad. Brig Gen Rashedi hailed the ongoing efforts of police to combat drug-related crimes - and bring offenders to justice. Police also renewed their call for members of the public to be their eyes and ears in the fight against drugs and urged those with information to contact them. People with information about drug offences can contact Abu Dhabi Police anonymously on 800 2626. _____________ Read more Dubai security chief wants harsher drugs sentencing Abu Dhabi plans dedicated drug courts from next year after rise in substance abuse cases VIDEO: Anti-drug patrols smash hashish and heroin smugglers in the Arabian Sea amid record narcotics hauls _____________
