Ford recalls thousands of cars in UAE over fuel delivery module fault

DUBAI // More than 3,000 Ford drivers have had their cars recalled in the UAE because of a fault in the fuel delivery module that the manufacturer says could result in fire.

The models affected are the 2013 MY Taurus, Explorer, Flex, Lincoln MKS and MKT, of which a total of 3,305 have been sold in the UAE.

It is part of a worldwide recall of 465,000 vehicles - mainly in North America and Mexico.

"Ford Middle East is announcing a service campaign for certain 2013 Ford Taurus, Explorer, Flex, and Lincoln MKS and MKT for a fuel delivery module that may leak," Ford Middle East said in a statement today.

The condition could result in customers smelling an odour of fuel or see fuel leaking onto the ground, said the carmaker.

"There have been no reports of fires, accidents or injuries attributed to this condition."

The service will involve the replacement of the fuel delivery module for the required model, and this will be carried out free of charge.

Ford first released a statement warning drivers of the risks on Monday:

"While a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire, there have been no reports of fires [and] we are not aware of any accidents or injuries attributed to this condition," the automotive giant told Reuters.

For more information, customers should contact Ford Middle East's Customer Assistance Centre at menacac@ford.com.

*An earlier version of this article said that the fuel tank of the vehicles was leaking. In fact the fault was in the fuel delivery module.

Other ways to buy used products in the UAE

UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.

Bidders and potential buyers register on the online salvage car auction portal to view vehicles, review condition reports, or arrange physical surveys, and then start bidding for motors they plan to restore or harvest for parts.

Physical salvage car auctions are a common method for insurers around the world to move on heavily damaged vehicles, but AWNIC is one of the few UAE insurers to offer such services online.

For cars and less sizeable items such as bicycles and furniture, Dubizzle is arguably the best-known marketplace for pre-loved.

Founded in 2005, in recent years it has been joined by a plethora of Facebook community pages for shifting used goods, including Abu Dhabi Marketplace, Flea Market UAE and Arabian Ranches Souq Market while sites such as The Luxury Closet and Riot deal largely in second-hand fashion.

At the high-end of the pre-used spectrum, resellers such as Timepiece360.ae, WatchBox Middle East and Watches Market Dubai deal in authenticated second-hand luxury timepieces from brands such as Rolex, Hublot and Tag Heuer, with a warranty.
