RAK AL KHAIMAH // Three private-farm desalination plants have been shut down for repeatedly flouting groundwater regulations.

The units were closed for repeatedly selling, using and depleting groundwater, which goes against procedures aimed at preserving natural resources, said Environment Protection and Development Authority director Dr Said Al Ghais.

Groundwater is to be used strictly for agricultural purposes. Its use for commercial purposes as desalinated water is strictly prohibited.
