ABU DHABI // An Emirati presence at an annual festival in Morocco will help to celebrate a vibrant Bedouin culture.
For the third year in a row Emiratis will take part in the Tan-Tan Moussem Festival.
The event, which is now in its 12th year, is recognised by Unesco as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
“An active Emirati participation in the activities of the Tan-Tan Moussem Festival is quite important as it boosts cultural dialogue and reinforces exchange between the main players in the field of authentic Bedouin heritage and culture,” said Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, chairman of the Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee — Abu Dhabi.
“This participation serves and strengthens the distinguished cultural ties between the UAE and the brotherly Kingdom of Morocco.”
The festival is a showcase of a diverse range performance arts of the desert locals, including music, popular songs, heritage games, poetry evenings, different oral traditions, and performances featuring horses, and camels.
Both the UAE and Morocco share a common interest, customs and traditions and the festival has helped to promote that further.
Mr Al Mazrouei said events such as this also help to raise awareness of Emirati heritage internationally.
“The Emirati participation in the two previous editions was remarkably effective as it succeeded in drawing the interest of a large public,” he said.
The Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee — Abu Dhabi is overseeing the participation of the Emirati delegation at the festival.
This is being done in cooperation with The Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, the General Women’s Union, the Camel Racing Federation, and the Advanced Scientific Group (The Veterinary Research Centre).

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
Skewed figures
In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The village's Neighbourhood Development Plan states that 26% of homes are holiday retreats. Prices are high, averaging around £300,000, £50,000 more than the Cornish average of £250,000. The local average wage is £15,458.
How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

How the UAE gratuity payment is calculated now
Employees leaving an organisation are entitled to an end-of-service gratuity after completing at least one year of service.
The tenure is calculated on the number of days worked and does not include lengthy leave periods, such as a sabbatical. If you have worked for a company between one and five years, you are paid 21 days of pay based on your final basic salary. After five years, however, you are entitled to 30 days of pay. The total lump sum you receive is based on the duration of your employment.
1. For those who have worked between one and five years, on a basic salary of Dh10,000 (calculation based on 30 days):
a. Dh10,000 ÷ 30 = Dh333.33. Your daily wage is Dh333.33
b. Dh333.33 x 21 = Dh7,000. So 21 days salary equates to Dh7,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service. Multiply this figure for every year of service up to five years.
2. For those who have worked more than five years
c. 333.33 x 30 = Dh10,000. So 30 days’ salary is Dh10,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service.
Note: The maximum figure cannot exceed two years total salary figure.
