Unemployed Emiratis who are university graduates are now eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (Adek) to pursue a post-graduate degree at home or abroad.
Adek said it was accepting applications from these candidates “for the first time ever,” when registration for its scholarship programme opens from February 18 through March 22. Emirati pupils in Grade 12 are also eligible and encouraged to continue applying.
The program seeks to attract Emirati graduates who do not have any part-time or full-time work obligations in a public or private company or organization. The candidate must have a certified bachelor or master’s degree from an accredited university, a grade point average of at least 3.0, and an academic IELTS score equivalent to 6.5 or higher to be considered for an interview. Male students must also submit a UAE Military National Services certificate.
Pupils in Grade 12 need to achieve a minimum average of 85 percent in the General Secondary Education Certificate, or equivalent, to qualify.
The scholarship covers the students’ tuition fees, monthly stipend, annual return ticket, housing allowance, textbook, health insurance and additional financial incentives for high achievers for the duration of the study period.
The program also provides job opportunities for the students after graduation.
Students wishing to pursue studies in medicine and health sciences, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and geology, materials science, space science, industrial chemistry, biotechnology, genetics, finance, accounting, economics and statistics are eligible to apply.

Dr Mohamed Baniyas, executive director of Adek’s higher education sector, said the annual scholarship program is meant to support a knowledge-based economy by establishing a pool of talented Emiratis.
“Scholarships are important as students will be introduced to the latest teaching and learning methodologies, and will help establish a well-educated national workforce specialized in different disciplines that meet the growing labour market needs. These programs, especially the international ones, will enrich the student experience as students will have the opportunity to engage with highly qualified faculty and get to know the different ideas and experiences that would stimulate creativity and innovation,” said Dr. Baniyas.
