ABU DHABI // Rafael Nadal sailed into his second successive final of the Capitala World Tennis Championship after beating Spanish compatriot David Ferrer 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 at Zayed Sports City International Tennis Complex. The world No 2 looked in control throughout and, despite being pushed to a tie-break in the first set, held his nerve to comfortably close out the match and book his place in today's final, where he will meet Swede Robin Soderling. Having both been part of the successful Davis Cup team who beat the Czech Republic last month, Nadal and Ferrer were familiar with each others strengths and weaknesses and they cancelled each other out for most of a close first set.
Ferrer matched Nadal early on and had his chances in the opening set, Nadal saving two break points in the fourth game and then a couple of set points at 4-5. The underdog, who beat World Tour Finals champion Nikolay Davydenko on Thursday, could not keep his momentum going in the tie-break, though, and an early break in the second set put Nadal on his way to victory. The world No 17 Ferrer, a late replacement for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, failed to find the same rhythm in the second and was broken in the second game. That was enough for Nadal to close the match and look forward to the duel he wanted, a final with Soderling.
Ferrer said: "I had my chances in the first set but Rafa served very well on important points. But I'm happy with my tennis." Nadal, who lost to Andy Murray in last year's final, added: "This is the perfect preparation for Doha and then the Australian Open." Soderling ended Nadal's unbeaten run of 31 matches on clay in the fourth round of the French Open last year to pave the way for Roger Federer to win the one grand slam that had eluded his stellar career.
Soderling also beat Nadal in a group game of the ATP Tour World Finals in London in November in which he failed to win a match. * With agencies

What is an FTO Designation?
FTO designations impose immigration restrictions on members of the organisation simply by virtue of their membership and triggers a criminal prohibition on knowingly providing material support or resources to the designated organisation as well as asset freezes.
It is a crime for a person in the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to or receive military-type training from or on behalf of a designated FTO.

What drives subscription retailing?
Once the domain of newspaper home deliveries, subscription model retailing has combined with e-commerce to permeate myriad products and services.
The concept has grown tremendously around the world and is forecast to thrive further, according to UnivDatos Market Insights’ report on recent and predicted trends in the sector.
The global subscription e-commerce market was valued at $13.2 billion (Dh48.5bn) in 2018. It is forecast to touch $478.2bn in 2025, and include the entertainment, fitness, food, cosmetics, baby care and fashion sectors.
The report says subscription-based services currently constitute “a small trend within e-commerce”. The US hosts almost 70 per cent of recurring plan firms, including leaders Dollar Shave Club, Hello Fresh and Netflix. Walmart and Sephora are among longer established retailers entering the space.
UnivDatos cites younger and affluent urbanites as prime subscription targets, with women currently the largest share of end-users.
That’s expected to remain unchanged until 2025, when women will represent a $246.6bn market share, owing to increasing numbers of start-ups targeting women.
Personal care and beauty occupy the largest chunk of the worldwide subscription e-commerce market, with changing lifestyles, work schedules, customisation and convenience among the chief future drivers.
Gender pay parity on track in the UAE
The UAE has a good record on gender pay parity, according to Mercer's Total Remuneration Study.
"In some of the lower levels of jobs women tend to be paid more than men, primarily because men are employed in blue collar jobs and women tend to be employed in white collar jobs which pay better," said Ted Raffoul, career products leader, Mena at Mercer. "I am yet to see a company in the UAE – particularly when you are looking at a blue chip multinationals or some of the bigger local companies – that actively discriminates when it comes to gender on pay."
Mr Raffoul said most gender issues are actually due to the cultural class, as the population is dominated by Asian and Arab cultures where men are generally expected to work and earn whereas women are meant to start a family.
"For that reason, we see a different gender gap. There are less women in senior roles because women tend to focus less on this but that’s not due to any companies having a policy penalising women for any reasons – it’s a cultural thing," he said.
As a result, Mr Raffoul said many companies in the UAE are coming up with benefit package programmes to help working mothers and the career development of women in general.
