Saudi-backed Yemen government soldiers ride in a pick-up truck near the Jabal Han front, west of the city of Taiz, following fierce battles earlier in the day as Yemen's Houthis attempted to seize control of the main route between the inland city of Taiz and the coastal city of Aden, on October 3, 2026. The civil war, which dates to 2014 but had been dormant following a truce in 2022 roared back to life in July, as the wider Middle East war ignited another front. The Houthis, a predominantly Zaidi Shia group whose heartlands lie in the north of the country, have since early in the war controlled most of Yemen's populated areas. The internationally recognised government, which has been backed militarily by a Saudi-led coalition since 2015, controls the south including the port city of Aden. (Photo by Ahmad AL-BASHA / AFP)
