‘Next generation’ hostel offers a modern budget break in Venice
The German A&O group, which owns hostels in more than 20 European cities, has opened a property in Venice, Italy. Located near the main railway station, the modern “next generation” hostel has 300 rooms offering 996 beds. Dorm rooms cost from €12 (Dh52) per person per night, while private single rooms cost from €60 (Dh259) per night. Ladies-only dorms are also available (www.aohostels.com).
Elevate your Danish experience with a stay in a coal crane
For something completely different, visitors to Denmark can now check into a disused coal crane in Copenhagen harbour. The structure, on the edge of Nordhavn at the 0resund coast, has been turned into a luxury two-person private retreat costing €2,500 (Dh10,775) per night. The building includes a hotel room, terrace, living space, meeting room and a spa, and is finished in wood, leather, stone and steel, with views across the water from the Danish capital (www.thekrane.dk/; www.amazing-space.dk).
Stay in a renovated refuge for mountaineers visiting a glacier
Take refuge in the French Alps in comfort at the Terminal Neige – Refuge du Montenvers, a new alpine hotel overlooking Mer de Glace near Chamonix. The original Montenvers refuge was built in 1880 to accommodate the first mountaineers visiting the glacier. It has undergone a complete renovation, with the redesigned interior housing 66 bedrooms, including two dormitories and a selection of family rooms, a restaurant, spa and library. The Refuge du Montenvers is at an altitude of 1,913 metres and is inaccessible by car, but there are regular trains from Chamonix. Double rooms cost from €150 (Dh647) per night on a half-board basis.
Mandalina boutique hotel in Turkey
Mandalina, a luxury waterfront hotel on the Kaş Peninsula, is now open, but only to adults and children over the age of 14. Individual suites feature high ceilings, glass balconies, sea views and hammam-style bathrooms. There are kayaks and mountain bikes to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding area while the hotel menu features family recipes from Izmir. Luxury travel agency Fairlight Jones offers seven nights' B&B from Dh3,500 per person, based on two sharing, including airport transfers and a one-day gulet cruise.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.

Important questions to consider
1. Where on the plane does my pet travel?
There are different types of travel available for pets:
- Manifest cargo
- Excess luggage in the hold
- Excess luggage in the cabin
Each option is safe. The feasibility of each option is based on the size and breed of your pet, the airline they are traveling on and country they are travelling to.
2. What is the difference between my pet traveling as manifest cargo or as excess luggage?
If traveling as manifest cargo, your pet is traveling in the front hold of the plane and can travel with or without you being on the same plane. The cost of your pets travel is based on volumetric weight, in other words, the size of their travel crate.
If traveling as excess luggage, your pet will be in the rear hold of the plane and must be traveling under the ticket of a human passenger. The cost of your pets travel is based on the actual (combined) weight of your pet in their crate.
3. What happens when my pet arrives in the country they are traveling to?
As soon as the flight arrives, your pet will be taken from the plane straight to the airport terminal.
If your pet is traveling as excess luggage, they will taken to the oversized luggage area in the arrival hall. Once you clear passport control, you will be able to collect them at the same time as your normal luggage. As you exit the airport via the ‘something to declare’ customs channel you will be asked to present your pets travel paperwork to the customs official and / or the vet on duty.
If your pet is traveling as manifest cargo, they will be taken to the Animal Reception Centre. There, their documentation will be reviewed by the staff of the ARC to ensure all is in order. At the same time, relevant customs formalities will be completed by staff based at the arriving airport.
4. How long does the travel paperwork and other travel preparations take?
This depends entirely on the location that your pet is traveling to. Your pet relocation compnay will provide you with an accurate timeline of how long the relevant preparations will take and at what point in the process the various steps must be taken.
In some cases they can get your pet ‘travel ready’ in a few days. In others it can be up to six months or more.
5. What vaccinations does my pet need to travel?
Regardless of where your pet is traveling, they will need certain vaccinations. The exact vaccinations they need are entirely dependent on the location they are traveling to. The one vaccination that is mandatory for every country your pet may travel to is a rabies vaccination.
Other vaccinations may also be necessary. These will be advised to you as relevant. In every situation, it is essential to keep your vaccinations current and to not miss a due date, even by one day. To do so could severely hinder your pets travel plans.

Five years ago, Uber launched in the Middle East. It was the start of an incredible journey, with millions of riders and drivers finding new ways to move and work in a dynamic region that’s become so important to Uber. Now Pakistan is one of our fastest-growing markets in the world, women are driving with Uber across Saudi Arabia, and we chose Cairo to launch our first Uber Bus product late last year.

Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.
I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each. Over time, by integrating parts of our networks, we can operate more efficiently, achieve even lower wait times, expand new products like high-capacity vehicles and payments, and quicken the already remarkable pace of innovation in the region.
This acquisition is subject to regulatory approval in various countries, which we don’t expect before Q1 2020. Until then, nothing changes. His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
