Priyanka Chopra has joined the Matrix 4 cast.

The Quantico star has been added to the line-up alongside Keanu Reeves in the sci-fi film, which also stars Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jonathan Groff.

Filming started before Covid-19 lockdowns in San Francisco. Production has since resumed in Berlin, Germany, after it was put on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic in March.

The sci-fi film series is beloved by fans and tells of the "cyberpunk story of the technological fall of man".

In the dystopian fantasy, Reeves stars as hacker Neo in a world where what we know as real life is actually a simulated reality. The planet has, in fact, been overthrown by robots that use human bodies as batteries. Neo becomes unplugged from the "matrix", where he bands together with a group of rebels led by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne).

The fourth instalment follows The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions  (2003). It is scheduled for release on April 1, 2022.

The fourth film is co-written and directed by Lana Wachowski, one of the two Wachowski sisters. Lilly and Lana Wachowski wrote and directed the previous three Matrix films together, while Lana has written the latest movie with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.

"Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now," Lana Wachowski has said of the project. "I'm very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."

Of the film, Reeves told Empire: "Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me.

"That's the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing ... It's been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from."

Little is known about Chopra's role, or the film in general. Her character's name is yet to be announced and the plot is currently unknown. However, it has been confirmed that Moss and Reeves are resuming their roles as Trinity and Neo, respectively.

Chopra's last movie release was 2019's The Sky Is Pink, and she has two films in post-production, ready for 2020 release, We Can Be Heroes and The White Tiger.
