When Disney dropped a 40-second teaser for the forthcoming Star Wars prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story, a lot of fans were left scratching their heads. Disney gave very little away in the clip, which was more dramatic music and lingering graphics than narrative hints. However, the revelation that Star Wars icon Han Solo may have started out as an imperial pilot – a storyline that has already been tried and dropped in the now non-canon Star Wars expanded universe – saw fan boys take on varying degrees of admiration/rage online.
This was perhaps an intentional ploy to leave fans wanting more, as the football game wasn't even over when Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard popped up on Twitter to reveal that the teaser was in fact a teaser for the first full trailer, which would launch Monday, and duly landed on Good Morning America at about 5.30pm UAE time:
The new trailer goes into a little more depth, although in typical Star Wars fashion, it doesn’t spell too much out for us, but we can see that the movie looks set to focus on plenty of action and space battles, and a shiny, new-looking Millenium Falcon is sure to please the die-hards.
Woody Harrelson, though his appearance is brief, looks to be having fun in his role as presumed space smuggler Beckett, and Emilia Clarke, aka Game of Thrones' Dragon Mother Daenerys Targaryen, looks typically stunning, though we don't learn too much about who she may be, other than that she claims to know what Han "really is", so some intrigue there.
Of the returning characters, Alden Ehrenreich seems to be doing a decent job of capturing Harrison Ford’s loveable rogue schtick as Han, though he has a mountain to climb to convince fans that anyone other than Ford can play Solo. Donald Glover, on the other hand, is already receiving glowing praise among the early online reactions to the trailer for effortlessly slipping into the role of Lando Calrission, played by Billy Dee Williams in the original trilogy.
It’s perhaps a little unfair that Glover is seemingly getting such an easy ride based on mere milliseconds of footage, while Ehrenreich looks like he’ll have to prove himself over and over again, but if you will step into the tight trousers and waistcoat of one of geek culture’s most adored icons, you probably know what to expect.
