I'm sure that when John Milton was writing Paradise Lost in the 1660s, his ultimate hope was that posterity would, one day, reward him by naming a Nicolas Cage character in a 3D action film after him. His ship just came in. Cage plays a man who also happens to be named John Milton, although he isn't a poet. No, he was apparently a very bad man when he was alive, although we don't find out how. Still, that doesn't matter - why waste time on plot when there are things to blow up? Also, he's dead. However, we meet him soon after he's broken out of hell, back in America to avenge the death of his daughter, it transpires. Again, none of that is particularly important - what is important is that he hooks up with an attractive waitress (Amber Heard), and that they drive off (angrily) in a very fast car with some very big guns. Drive Angry 3D (for that is its full title) revels in its own ridiculousness. It's absolutely, unashamedly bananas, more like a video game than a film. There are miniature guitar solos every time anyone shows up or anybody does anything. Explosions and gory, brutal violence abound, and the 3D is indeed impressive, although it helps if you like lots of flying debris. It's wholly inane and all rather tedious. Then again, if you're the sort of person who wants to see a Nicolas Cage film called Drive Angry 3D, you'll undoubtedly have the time of your life.
