If Abu Dhabi residents were asked to describe a good day at the beach, yesterday would be it.

The weather was spectacular, the water was a crystal-clear, turquoise hue - and a few unexpected marine mammals popped in to entertain the beachgoers.

A pod of dolphins was spotted just off the beach near the Saadiyat Beach Club on Saturday afternoon by excited onlookers.

Beachgoers looked on in awe as a mother and her calf made an appearance, surfacing as four or five other dolphins played nearby in the waves.

After about five minutes of taking in the shallow Abu Dhabi waters, the pod carried on along the Arabian coastline.

This isn’t the first time dolphins have been spotted in UAE waters.

Just last year, several dolphins were caught on camera in Abu Dhabi’s Hudayriat channel, a humpback whale and her calf were sighted one kilometre off the Dubai coast and a 4-metre whale shark was spotted near Jumeirah Fisherman’s Harbour in June.
