Sheikha Jawaher speaks out about child cancer awareness

SHARJAH // Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, has called on the international community to stand up to the increasing number of children dying due to cancer around the world.

February 15 marked International Childhood Cancer Day, and Sheikha Jawaher emphasised the need for the international community to shoulder its humanitarian responsibility towards these children, especially those who do not have access to specialised clinics or hospitals to provide them with the necessary treatment and medical care.

According to the World Health Organisation, nearly 80 per cent of children with cancer are living in developing countries, and over 200,000 children develop cancer worldwide each year, with a mortality rate of approximately 96,000 per year.

Sheikha Jawaher is the founder and Royal patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FoCP).

Who is Tim-Berners Lee?

Sir Tim Berners-Lee was born in London in a household of mathematicians and computer scientists. Both his mother, Mary Lee, and father, Conway, were early computer scientists who worked on the Ferranti 1 - the world's first commercially-available, general purpose digital computer. Sir Tim studied Physics at the University of Oxford and held a series of roles developing code and building software before moving to Switzerland to work for Cern, the European Particle Physics laboratory. He developed the worldwide web code as a side project in 1989 as a global information-sharing system. After releasing the first web code in 1991, Cern made it open and free for all to use. Sir Tim now campaigns for initiatives to make sure the web remains open and accessible to all.
