Dubai resident says Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was her ‘best Christmas gift’

Dubai residents and doctors spoke of their relief after getting the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on Wednesday.

Carolyn Belsey Morton and her husband Graham, both 74, were inoculated on Wednesday evening in the Uptown Mirdif Medical Fitness Centre.

The couple said it was “the best Christmas present they could have hoped for”.

“I can’t begin to tell you what a relief it was to finally get the vaccine,” said Ms Morton, an Englishwoman who runs a music shop in Dubai.

We are both quite healthy but we are also at an age at which we are more vulnerable than others.

“We are both quite healthy but we are also at an age at which we are more vulnerable than others.

“I still can’t believe we were able to get the vaccine. We weren’t expecting it to become available until next year at the earliest.”

Ms Morton and her husband signed a consent form before vaccination and they felt no side effects.

“It was just like every other injection I have ever had,” she said.

“I felt a little prick. I had no qualms at all.

“I can’t praise the staff at the clinic highly enough. They were so helpful.”

Dr Nikita Malhotra and her husband Dr Sandeep Malhotra said they felt safer after getting their first doses of the vaccine.

Dr Nikita, an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Medcare Hospital in Al Safa, said she was excited to be the first doctor at her hospital to get the vaccine on Wednesday.

“I feel comforted and secure because I am an ENT surgeon and am constantly seeing patients with upper respiratory infections," she said.

"Taking the first shot of the vaccine made me feel protected.

"I have had patients coming in to see me with fever, cough and flu symptoms, and many turned out to be Covid-19 positive.

“I took all the precautions but at the back of my mind thought about when the vaccine would be available."

Both couples will need to take the second dose of the vaccine after three weeks.

Dr Nikita said she felt no side effects other than a bit of soreness where she had the injection.

She encouraged residents who were eligible to take the vaccine and help control the spread of the virus.

"Dubai has handled this very well and has prioritised people who are most at risk," she said.

"By this, they are curtailing the spread of the virus and this is the perfect formula."

Dr Nikita said she booked the appointment through the DHA Hotline number and got a text message explaining the process.

She carried her Emirates ID to the centre and told the doctors her medical history.

The registration took a few minutes and she had to fill out a questionnaire to specify any allergies to food or medicines.

The vaccinated individual is monitored for 20 minutes after having the injection.

Dr Sandeep, a paediatric dentist at JTS Medical Centre, received the first dose at Zabeel Primary Health Care Centre on Thursday.

"The whole world has been waiting for this vaccine," he said.

Dr Sandeep said he was sceptical and careful when taking on cases during the pandemic, because dentists and nurses are at risk of catching the virus during procedures.

"Now, because of the vaccine, I feel much more comfortable," Dr Sandeep said.

"I would encourage others to take the vaccine. This is the only way we can control the virus."

UAE currency: the story behind the money in your pockets
What the law says

Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.

“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.

“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”

If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Why it pays to compare

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.

Route 1: bank transfer

The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount

Total received: €4,670.30

Route 2: online platform

The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction

Total received: €4,756

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Pharaoh's curse

British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
