Food-safety standards in Abu Dhabi to be improved

Food-safety standards in Abu Dhabi will be improved after the emirate's Food Control Authority added equipment to its research laboratories today.

The authority acquired tools to improve methods of detecting pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and phytoplasma.

The labs are now equipped with a fluorescent microscope that uses natural and ultraviolet lighting to detect plant pathogens that will have a "positive impact on pests with serious economic consequences for agricultural production", a spokesman for the authority said.
