Back to school for Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince as he spends time in class with pupils

Pupils returning to a girls' school in Abu Dhabi were joined by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Smiling and perched at the back of the class, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, sat in on a lesson with pupils at the government-run girls' school in Khalifa City.

On Saturday, he urged pupils to enjoy school but also seize the opportunity to learn and prepare themselves for the future.

"Continue your educational journey with all seriousness and hard work, as our goal is no longer to pass only - but to excel and make it to the top," he wrote on Twitter.

Joining him was Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, Deputy Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

Al Asayel School saw a major investment in interactive equipment earlier this year, with traditional teaching materials replaced with an interactive calendar, digital avatars and iPads.

Grade six at the school is also now being taught by Alef Education, a private online education platform that engages pupils through the use of technology. The UAE-based company signed a deal in the last academic year to implement Alef’s education system in 10 Abu Dhabi public schools.

Lessons are taught with the help of video guides and teachers often revisit topics on-screen to make sure pupils have a good understanding before moving on.

Who was Alfred Nobel?

The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.

  • In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
  • Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
  • Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.

If you had all the money in the world, what’s the one sneaker you would buy or create?

“There are a few shoes that have ‘grail’ status for me. But the one I have always wanted is the Nike x Patta x Parra Air Max 1 - Cherrywood. To get a pair in my size brand new is would cost me between Dh8,000 and Dh 10,000.” Jack Brett

“If I had all the money, I would approach Nike and ask them to do my own Air Force 1, that’s one of my dreams.” Yaseen Benchouche

“There’s nothing out there yet that I’d pay an insane amount for, but I’d love to create my own shoe with Tinker Hatfield and Jordan.” Joshua Cox

“I think I’d buy a defunct footwear brand; I’d like the challenge of reinterpreting a brand’s history and changing options.” Kris Balerite

“I’d stir up a creative collaboration with designers Martin Margiela of the mixed patchwork sneakers, and Yohji Yamamoto.” Hussain Moloobhoy

“If I had all the money in the world, I’d live somewhere where I’d never have to wear shoes again.” Raj Malhotra
