DUBAI // Two men who stole a Land Cruiser belonging to the Iranian government were today sentenced to three years in jail.
MH, 55, an Iranian businessman, testified that the car was to be shipped to the Iranian Embassy in Ghana through a company in Ras Al Khor, but was noticed missing on April 5 this year.
"We were told by the shipping company that the car was not in the company's car park, although we parked it there," the businessman said.
He said he saw pieces of broken glass on the ground where the car had been and reported it stolen to police, who found the vehicle four days later. The police arrested four men who they suspected planned to use forged documents to ship the car, and others, to Afghanistan from Sharjah.
SM, a 50-year-old Pakistani, EF, a 42-year-old Indian, and AS, a 34-year-old from Afghanistan, were charged with theft, while GA, a 24-year-old from Afghanistan, was charged with aiding and abetting. The Criminal Court found the Pakistani and the Indian guilty, but acquitted the two Afghans.
Both men will be deported after completing their prison terms.
