Last year, Andrew Symonds was sent home from England just three days before the start of Australia's World Twenty20 campaign for another misdemeanour. Ian Healy, his former Australia and Queensland teammate, claimed the prodigious all-rounder was "just cooked and tired of cricket, and sort of wants to be dropped".
Playing alongside Adam Gilchrist, another former Australia teammate, with the Deccan Chargers, Symonds is showing no signs of fatigue or frustration. Instead, he seems to be enjoying the limelight and rediscovering the competitive edge that saw him become one of the most potent cricketers of this generation.
You could see the glint in his eyes when he caught Dinesh Karthik off his own bowling in the 19th over and then pointed the Delhi Daredevils captain towards the pavilion. That catch sealed the fate of the IPL's match No 15 and, predictably, Symonds was adjudged man of the match for the second consecutive game.
Karthik had smashed Symond's first ball to the fence and the Daredevils needed just 16 from the remaining 11 balls to halt their run of two successive defeats. But following their captain's departure for a 27-ball 46, the visitors fell short by 10 runs in chasing 172.
Symonds, who took three wickets as the Daredevils were restricted to 161-9, had earlier blasted a 24-ball 35 as the Chargers posted a challenging 171-6 on their home ground in Cuttack, with Rohit Sharma contributing a classy 45 towards the end.
"Roy's [Symonds] second-last over just changed the whole thing," said Herschelle Gibbs, who partnered Symonds in a brief 28-run partnership for the third wicket.
"He makes clearing the ropes look quite easy at the best of times. It's just lovely to be playing with him. Obviously it's quite important that we try and stabilise in the middle there and if one of us can get in, we can both have a go. If one gets out, the other can score over there."
While he has been playing a stellar role on the field, Symonds has been a bigger influence behind the scene for the Chargers, according to Gilchrist.
"Symmo and [Chaminda] Vaas have been two standouts on the field," said Gilchrist, who has now guided the defending champions to three wins from four games.
"But it's what they are doing off the field with our group and the way our group is relishing being around those players."
The Daredevils looked to be cruising towards victory at the start of their innings when David Warner launched into the attack. He flew out of the blocks, blazing 29 runs off his first 12 balls before Virender Sehwag had even faced a delivery.
But once the Australian departed in the 11th over, run out going for an unnecessary single, with the visitors still needing 87 runs, it went downhill for the Daredevils.
Karthik made a determined bid, but lacked support at the other end.
Delhi have now lost three of their five games and Karthik, captaining the team in the absence of the injured Gautam Gambhir, said: "In Twenty20, you are always going to have close games.
"It's about who handles the pressure better in the end and I think we didn't do it this game."

Top New Zealand cop on policing the virtual world
New Zealand police began closer scrutiny of social media and online communities after the attacks on two mosques in March, the country's top officer said.
The killing of 51 people in Christchurch and wounding of more than 40 others shocked the world. Brenton Tarrant, a suspected white supremacist, was accused of the killings. His trial is ongoing and he denies the charges.
Mike Bush, commissioner of New Zealand Police, said officers looked closely at how they monitored social media in the wake of the tragedy to see if lessons could be learned.
“We decided that it was fit for purpose but we need to deepen it in terms of community relationships, extending them not only with the traditional community but the virtual one as well," he told The National.
"We want to get ahead of attacks like we suffered in New Zealand so we have to challenge ourselves to be better."

Young women have more “financial grit”, but fall behind on investing
In an October survey of young adults aged 16 to 25, Charles Schwab found young women are more driven to reach financial independence than young men (67 per cent versus. 58 per cent). They are more likely to take on extra work to make ends meet and see more value than men in creating a plan to achieve their financial goals. Yet, despite all these good ‘first’ measures, they are investing and saving less than young men – falling early into the financial gender gap.
While the women surveyed report spending 36 per cent less than men, they have far less savings than men ($1,267 versus $2,000) – a nearly 60 per cent difference.
In addition, twice as many young men as women say they would invest spare cash, and almost twice as many young men as women report having investment accounts (though most young adults do not invest at all).
“Despite their good intentions, young women start to fall behind their male counterparts in savings and investing early on in life,” said Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz, senior vice president, Charles Schwab. “They start off showing a strong financial planning mindset, but there is still room for further education when it comes to managing their day-to-day finances.”
Ms Schwab-Pomerantz says parents should be conveying the same messages to boys and girls about money, but should tailor those conversations based on the individual and gender.
"Our study shows that while boys are spending more than girls, they also are saving more. Have open and honest conversations with your daughters about the wage and savings gap," she said. "Teach kids about the importance of investing – especially girls, who as we see in this study, aren’t investing as much. Part of being financially prepared is learning to make the most of your money, and that means investing early and consistently."

Salah in numbers
€39 million: Liverpool agreed a fee, including add-ons, in the region of €39m (nearly Dh176m) to sign Salah from Roma last year. The exchange rate at the time meant that cost the Reds £34.3m - a bargain given his performances since.
13: The 25-year-old player was not a complete stranger to the Premier League when he arrived at Liverpool this summer. However, during his previous stint at Chelsea, he made just 13 Premier League appearances, seven of which were off the bench, and scored only twice.
57: It was in the 57th minute of his Liverpool bow when Salah opened his account for the Reds in the 3-3 draw with Watford back in August. The Egyptian prodded the ball over the line from close range after latching onto Roberto Firmino's attempted lob.
7: Salah's best scoring streak of the season occurred between an FA Cup tie against West Brom on January 27 and a Premier League win over Newcastle on March 3. He scored for seven games running in all competitions and struck twice against Tottenham.
3: This season Salah became the first player in Premier League history to win the player of the month award three times during a term. He was voted as the division's best player in November, February and March.
40: Salah joined Roger Hunt and Ian Rush as the only players in Liverpool's history to have scored 40 times in a single season when he headed home against Bournemouth at Anfield earlier this month.
30: The goal against Bournemouth ensured the Egyptian achieved another milestone in becoming the first African player to score 30 times across one Premier League campaign.
8: As well as his fine form in England, Salah has also scored eight times in the tournament phase of this season's Champions League. Only Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, with 15 to his credit, has found the net more often in the group stages and knockout rounds of Europe's premier club competition.

How to invest in gold
Investors can tap into the gold price by purchasing physical jewellery, coins and even gold bars, but these need to be stored safely and possibly insured.
A cheaper and more straightforward way to benefit from gold price growth is to buy an exchange-traded fund (ETF).
Most advisers suggest sticking to “physical” ETFs. These hold actual gold bullion, bars and coins in a vault on investors’ behalf. Others do not hold gold but use derivatives to track the price instead, adding an extra layer of risk. The two biggest physical gold ETFs are SPDR Gold Trust and iShares Gold Trust.
Another way to invest in gold’s success is to buy gold mining stocks, but Mr Gravier says this brings added risks and can be more volatile. “They have a serious downside potential should the price consolidate.”
Mr Kyprianou says gold and gold miners are two different asset classes. “One is a commodity and the other is a company stock, which means they behave differently.”
Mining companies are a business, susceptible to other market forces, such as worker availability, health and safety, strikes, debt levels, and so on. “These have nothing to do with gold at all. It means that some companies will survive, others won’t.”
By contrast, when gold is mined, it just sits in a vault. “It doesn’t even rust, which means it retains its value,” Mr Kyprianou says.
You may already have exposure to gold miners in your portfolio, say, through an international ETF or actively managed mutual fund.
You could spread this risk with an actively managed fund that invests in a spread of gold miners, with the best known being BlackRock Gold & General. It is up an incredible 55 per cent over the past year, and 240 per cent over five years. As always, past performance is no guide to the future.

Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.
A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.
Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.
A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.
On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.
The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.
Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.
The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.
