Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the ICC arrest warrants issued against him and former defence minister Yoav Gallant on Thursday are an “anti-Semitic measure” that breaches “the natural right of democracies to defend themselves against murderous terrorism”.
Mr Netanyahu said the warrants served only to deter Israel “from exercising our natural right to defend ourselves against our enemies”. The US is among an outlying cohort of foreign allies that have criticised the court’s decision.
The ICC confirmed it had issued warrants for the arrest of Mr Netanyahu and Mr Gallant Thursday. It followed a court filing made by ICC prosecutor Karim Khan, who accused Israel of using starvation as a method of war.
Israeli strikes killed at least 51 people across Lebanon on Thursday. The Lebanese Health Ministry said in the country’s east, air strikes killed 40 people in 10 different towns in Baalbek province. As of Thursday, the Health Ministry had recorded at least 3,583 people killed and 15,244 wounded in Lebanon during the 13-month war between Hezbollah and Israel, with the majority of casualties taking place after Israel’s escalation and ground offensive in late September.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow struck Ukraine with a new type of missile, marking an apparent escalation of the nearly three-year-long war.
Reuters reports Russia fired a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday. The attack was a response to the US and UK allowing Kyiv to strike Russian territory with advanced western weapons.
How Alia's experiment will help humans get to Mars
Alia’s winning experiment examined how genes might change under the stresses caused by being in space, such as cosmic radiation and microgravity.
Her samples were placed in a machine on board the International Space Station. called a miniPCR thermal cycler, which can copy DNA multiple times.
After the samples were examined on return to Earth, scientists were able to successfully detect changes caused by being in space in the way DNA transmits instructions through proteins and other molecules in living organisms.
Although Alia’s samples were taken from nematode worms, the results have much bigger long term applications, especially for human space flight and long term missions, such as to Mars.
It also means that the first DNA experiments using human genomes can now be carried out on the ISS.

Electoral College Victory
Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.
