Trapped in an online fantasy?

I refer to psychologist Justin Thomas's opinion article, Online gamers beware, you might be dangerously addicted (July 28).

I know this is the case, and I am trying to stop playing online games.

To anyone who experienced the bias of the United States' media during the Vietnam war, the reporting of present-day conflicts will be nothing new (American media distorts the way Palestinians are viewed, July 27).

The television news channels make a big thing of one rocket falling through the roof of one house injuring one person, but rarely touch on the firing of Israeli arms destroying whole blocks of houses and killing many people at one time.

A family of 18 Palestinians was killed in one such incident.

In a cynical way of looking at the Israeli/Palestinian “problem”, the only people profiting from it are the arms dealers.

The US must understand that this catastrophe will continue as long as it continues its total, unquestioning support of Israel’s actions.

Americans must learn that Israel is not their only friend in this part of the world. In fact, I would say it is their worst enemy, since this “friendship” has caused the death of so many young Americans.

This is a warning to readers to watch out for a surprise at the cinema.

My family went to see a movie at a popular Abu Dhabi multi-screen cinema on Monday and we were welcomed with a big increase in food and beverage prices.

What used to cost Dh34 before Ramadan is now Dh50.

I enjoyed reading It's a nappy Eid for UAE mums and their newborns (July 28).

They should make a television series about the work done at the Corniche Hospital by Dr Khulood Al Suwaidi and her team.

Everybody likes stories about babies, and the show could also be used as a way to communicate health issues and encourage more people to seek jobs in health care and medicine.

Omar Jaramillo , Germany

Congratulations to the mother pictured in the article, Lucian Zimmerspitz, and to her baby, Kian.

J Bishop, Abu Dhabi

I have seen some complaints on your Facebook page regarding HSBC refunds three years of monthly charges to customers (July 27).

Nothing will ever satisfy some people.

HSBC has refunded customers’ money proactively, yet some people are questioning this.

Hala Jammal, Abu Dhabi

Did the customers receive interest on their refunds?

Faizan Uddin, Dubai

In reference to Crowds flock to Dubai and Abu Dhabi malls to celebrate Eid Al Fitr (July 29), I don't see the fascination with malls.

Why not go to a park, a lake, a beach or a mountain instead?

J Paravalos, Dubai

I agree with your editorial Airlines deserve help in avoiding conflict zones (July 29).

Commercial carriers shouldn’t be flying over war zones.

Donna Ligon, US

I am glad that Emirates has stopped flying over Iraq, but I wonder what other airlines in this region are doing.

It is good to see that Indian Muslims are doing something about the suffering of Palestinians (Muslims in India boycott Coke and Pepsi in silent protest against Gaza attacks, July 29)

This is a show of solidarity with the victims of attacks by the Israeli military.

Stormy seas

Weather warnings show that Storm Eunice is soon to make landfall. The videographer and I are scrambling to return to the other side of the Channel before it does. As we race to the port of Calais, I see miles of wire fencing topped with barbed wire all around it, a silent ‘Keep Out’ sign for those who, unlike us, aren’t lucky enough to have the right to move freely and safely across borders.

We set sail on a giant ferry whose length dwarfs the dinghies migrants use by nearly a 100 times. Despite the windy rain lashing at the portholes, we arrive safely in Dover; grateful but acutely aware of the miserable conditions the people we’ve left behind are in and of the privilege of choice.
