Summer can be anything but routine. Whether it’s preparations for a long holiday or Eid festivities, it’s easy for us to skip things that otherwise fit into our regular schedules. Giving blood is one of those things.

It is unfortunate that blood donations drop during Ramadan, the month of selfless giving. As The National reported yesterday, supply is moving towards critically low levels at blood banks across the country.

These banks are crucial for meeting the needs of patients being treated for diseases and illnesses such as transplant, leukaemia, cancer, trauma and accident victims. Blood has a shelf-life, which means that hospitals are in need of regular donors.

Statistics show that one unit of blood can be used to help up to three people. Multiply that by 10 donors, or 100 donors, and the far-reaching impact is easily recognised. It’s giving life. So why not visit the nearest blood donation centre when you have some spare time?
