Weddings are big business: Priyanka Chopra shares sponsored content from her wedding

Getting hitched can be expensive, but star couples are cashing in on wedding-day endorsements

We all know that celebrities can make serious bank when they make their union official. Not only do they get expensive things like a dress or venue for free, it's also reported that famous pairs can sell their wedding photos for around $2 million (Dh5 million).

Brad and Jennifer's shots reportedly went for $1.9 million, Mariah and Nick Cannon made an apparent $2 million and Posh and Becks passed off their snaps for an estimated $1.6 million – and remember, that was in 1999.

In the age of Instagram, there's a whole new way to monetise your marriage – sponsored content.

Priyanka Chopra, 36, shared this photo of Nick Jonas, 26, holding her in his arms in front of Umaid Bhawan Palace, the luxury hotel where the pair were wed. But this isn't just any photo - this is an advertisement for Amazon's gift registry, which serves as a reminder that in the era of social media, we're the thing being monetised, and we're being sold products and services from all angles.

The caption on the post reads: "Having our family and friends share our special day with us meant so much…the smiles, the words, the love and the hugs – all so thoughtful. Pro tip: If you're planning your big day, head over to the wedding registry guide I created on @amazon. Trust me, it has all my favorite gift ideas in one place and was so much fun to build! #AllOnAmazon #Ad #AmazonWeddingRegistry @amazonhome"

This isn't the only push Chopra gave to brands in the events surrounding her big day. Her bachelorette party was held inside New York's Tiffany & Co store, and she was of course wearing Tiffany diamonds. In this post she points out that everyone in the picture is dressed "in head to toe @ralphlauren":

In this image, she tagged her wedding photographer – the designer Sabyasachi – as well as Hello magazine in the UK and the American glossy People.

And to think, most people, particularly many of India's poorest, get into serious debt for their weddings – something that often leads to bonded labour, leaving vulnerable communities in a cycle of poverty.

The Chopra-Jonas wedding celebrations aren't over yet. The pair still have a Bollywood reception planned for tomorrow (December 20), where we can expect to see plenty of celebrities, and perhaps more branded partnerships.
