Brunch at: The Foundry, Southern Sun Abu Dhabi

The location:

The Foundry is a class of its own within the Southern Sun Abu Dhabi hotel. When you walk in to the four-star property from the street it’s not completely clear what you’re going to find inside, but I was pleasantly surprised as I walked out of the lift at the gourmet steakhouse which has developed quite the reputation here in the capital. The live cooking stations offer a fresh, interactive food experience.

The atmosphere:

The metallic brass detailing and the comfortable dining set-up, which includes velvet seats and subtle tones, proves a winner with the foodies who have come along to check out the hotel’s recently-launched ‘Raising the Steaks’ brunch. It’s a very intimate, warm and inviting space that allows diners the space and privacy they need in various seating configurations. Despite the classy furnishings, there was a very comfortable relaxed vibe and plenty of room to move around comfortably.

The food:

The name is pretty much spot on, because this steakhouse definitely ‘meats’ expectations and raises the quality of brunch offerings in the UAE. The steak station alone is worth the visit, with a selection of cuts from various countries around the globe, all cooked to your specifications. The executive chef, Manish Law is on hand to answer any questions and there are inventive stations including a tacos and ceviche bar; a carpaccio, tartar station and a Fois gras gallery that offer a different take on the popular dishes. My recommendations are the seared foie gras with a celeric texture, braised Granny Smith and Calvados jus and the slow cooked lamb shanks. The dedicated cheese room can’t go without a mention either, although it’s not as packed with cheese as I expected, it was a cheese wonderland in the middle of the dining room, nonetheless.

Who is it best for?

It goes without saying this is a brunch for meatlovers, it ticks all the boxes. Ideal for couples and small groups (children are permitted).

The verdict:

A must-try brunch that is packed with variety and is as tasty in the decor ‘steaks’ as it is in the food department.
