Met Gala 2019: Celebrities that took the 'camp' theme very literally

There is no doubt that Katy Perry, Harry Styles and Lady Gaga brought flamboyance to the 2019 Met Gala, in line with its theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion.

But it seems that the word "camp" may have confused a star or two, who looked dressed more for a forest adventure than an evening fund-raising for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.

It's important to note that I have spent exactly zero nights of my life sleeping in the great outdoors, so my interpretation of camping equipment may be way off ... but here I round up the stars who may have missed the point.

Frank Ocean

It may be Prada, but that, Frank, is a windbreaker and much more suited to a day in the great outdoors than for the Super Bowl of fashion. Easy mistake.

Lady Gaga

There is no doubt that Gaga is flamboyant: she is, after all, the Queen of Camp. But Stefani Germanotta is also dressed as an actual tent – a family of four could comfortably camp out in that thing. The umbrellas are simply sensible packing for unpredictable weather conditions.

Cardi B

She may have made like Rihanna with her giant train on the steps, but what is it her dress is made of? That looks an awful lot like a camper's best friend, the humble sleeping bag, to me.

Kim Kardashian

Perhaps not dressed for the actual great outdoors, but Kim Kardashian does seem to be soaked through after being caught unawares in a rainstorm. A classic camping mistake.

Amber Valletta

Model, Amber Valletta, came as an actual bush...

Katy Perry

Do people eat burgers around the campfire? I imagine they probably do. After changing out of her chandelier-inspired outfit, Perry donned a hyper-realistic burger suit.

Karlie Kloss

It looks as though the model is wearing a giant Graham cracker, the foundation of campfire staple, s'mores.

Celine Dion

Face of camp, Celine Dion, originally read the invite as an evening of s'mores and tent pegs.

"At first I was a little bit confused when I heard 'camp,'" Dion told E! News. "I thought it meant 'camping'. We're going camping! We're going to be at the Met and everyone is going to stay and sleep all night together. But, no."

In the end, however, she nailed the flamboyant camp theme with ease.

It’ll be summer in the city as car show tries to move with the times

If 2008 was the year that rocked Detroit, 2019 will be when Motor City gives its annual car extravaganza a revamp that aims to move with the times.

A major change is that this week's North American International Auto Show will be the last to be held in January, after which the event will switch to June.

The new date, organisers said, will allow exhibitors to move vehicles and activities outside the Cobo Center's halls and into other city venues, unencumbered by cold January weather, exemplified this week by snow and ice.

In a market in which trends can easily be outpaced beyond one event, the need to do so was probably exacerbated by the decision of Germany's big three carmakers – BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi – to skip the auto show this year.

The show has long allowed car enthusiasts to sit behind the wheel of the latest models at the start of the calendar year but a more fluid car market in an online world has made sales less seasonal.

Similarly, everyday technology seems to be catching up on those whose job it is to get behind microphones and try and tempt the visiting public into making a purchase.

Although sparkly announcers clasp iPads and outline the technical gadgetry hidden beneath bonnets, people's obsession with their own smartphones often appeared to offer a more tempting distraction.

“It's maddening,” said one such worker at Nissan's stand.

The absence of some pizzazz, as well as top marques, was also noted by patrons.

“It looks like there are a few less cars this year,” one annual attendee said of this year's exhibitors.

“I can't help but think it's easier to stay at home than to brave the snow and come here.”
