In January 2008, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque welcomed its first visitors. In March that year, the second Art Dubai took place, and it was twice the size of the inaugural event. In November, The Dubai Mall opened.

That year, Eid Al Fitr began on the evening of Tuesday, September 30. The next day, the UAE's rulers visited mosques across the country to pray alongside the faithful before receiving visitors at their majlises, as they do every year.

In this image, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, kneels in the centre, performing the morning prayers that mark the first day of Eid. To the left sits Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai.

On the far left of the image is Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and the chairman of Dubai Media Incorporated, and to his right is Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, chief executive and chairman of the Emirates Group. Kneeling next to Sheikh Mohammed is Minister of Finance Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid.

This year, Eid began on Tuesday after the UAE's moon-sighting committee met to confirm the end of Ramadan. Government workers have a week off for Eid Al Fitr in accordance with orders from President Sheikh Khalifa, while those working in the private sector are enjoying a four-day public holiday to mark the occasion.
