They might have been one member down since their last visit to the UAE, but that didn't stop the all-girl group Fifth Harmony from bringing an energetic performance to the stage this weekend. The foursome performed in front of a small crowd at du Forum in Abu Dhabi on Friday night.
Speaking to The National shortly before the gig, the former The X Factor (US) stars said they were happy to be back in the country.
“The last time we were here, it was really hot, but we had a great time,” said member Dinah Jane.
“Honestly, we’re grateful to just be here. We never have enough time, but it’s really beautiful here and we’re happy to see what we can see and to see our fans,” added Ally Brooke.
The group visited Dubai in 2016, where they performed at Virgin Radio’s RedFest DXB festival, alongside their former bandmate Camila Cabello. At the end of that year, Cabello departed the group in pursuit of a solo career.
The tabloids had a field day with that development, circulating rumours of infighting and also speculating whether there would be a future for the group. Despite that, the four remaining members pushed on, releasing their third, self-titled album in August.

The album peaked in the top five in the United States and shortly after its debut, the PSA Tour was announced, which included a trip to the UAE’s capital.
To get the show on the road, another RedFest DXB alumni Kelli-Leigh warmed up the stage, performing several of her songs including Do You Wanna Be Loved Like This.
When Fifth Harmony sang for their 'Harmonisers' the show was everything you'd expect from a high-energy pop performance: it featured hit singles like Sledgehammer, Bridges and Work From Home; great choreography and crowd interaction.
However, it seemed as though there were a few hiccups in the lighting department - if the shadows on some of the members were anything to go by. If it was for effect, it might need some attention for other gigs they do.
Among the highlights of the show were Jane's vocals. On Twitter, the star said she wanted to hold off a bit, but that didn't happen because, given the opportunity to belt out a high note, she went all out. Her rendition of Beyoncé's If I Were A Boy on The X Factor back in 2012 made music executive and judge LA Reid claim that even Knowles herself didn't take the song to the places Jane did. That's when you know you're on to something.
One can’t help but wonder then, is she gearing up for a big solo career too?

Children who witnessed blood bath want to help others
Aged just 11, Khulood Al Najjar’s daughter, Nora, bravely attempted to fight off Philip Spence. Her finger was injured when she put her hand in between the claw hammer and her mother’s head.
As a vital witness, she was forced to relive the ordeal by police who needed to identify the attacker and ensure he was found guilty.
Now aged 16, Nora has decided she wants to dedicate her career to helping other victims of crime.
“It was very horrible for her. She saw her mum, dying, just next to her eyes. But now she just wants to go forward,” said Khulood, speaking about how her eldest daughter was dealing with the trauma of the incident five years ago. “She is saying, 'mama, I want to be a lawyer, I want to help people achieve justice'.”
Khulood’s youngest daughter, Fatima, was seven at the time of the attack and attempted to help paramedics responding to the incident.
“Now she wants to be a maxillofacial doctor,” Khulood said. “She said to me ‘it is because a maxillofacial doctor returned your face, mama’. Now she wants to help people see themselves in the mirror again.”
Khulood’s son, Saeed, was nine in 2014 and slept through the attack. While he did not witness the trauma, this made it more difficult for him to understand what had happened. He has ambitions to become an engineer.

Torno Subito by Massimo Bottura
When the W Dubai – The Palm hotel opens at the end of this year, one of the highlights will be Massimo Bottura’s new restaurant, Torno Subito, which promises “to take guests on a journey back to 1960s Italy”. It is the three Michelinstarred chef’s first venture in Dubai and should be every bit as ambitious as you would expect from the man whose restaurant in Italy, Osteria Francescana, was crowned number one in this year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Another exciting opening at the W Dubai – The Palm hotel is South Korean chef Akira Back’s new restaurant, which will continue to showcase some of the finest Asian food in the world. Back, whose Seoul restaurant, Dosa, won a Michelin star last year, describes his menu as, “an innovative Japanese cuisine prepared with a Korean accent”.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
The highly experimental chef, whose dishes are as much about spectacle as taste, opens his first restaurant in Dubai next year. Housed at The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will feature contemporary twists on recipes that date back to the 1300s, including goats’ milk cheesecake. Always remember with a Blumenthal dish: nothing is quite as it seems.

What is Folia?
Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal's new plant-based menu will launch at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai this November. A desire to cater to people looking for clean, healthy meals beyond green salad is what inspired Prince Khaled and American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to create Folia. The word means "from the leaves" in Latin, and the exclusive menu offers fine plant-based cuisine across Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Bahrain and, soon, Dubai.
Kenney specialises in vegan cuisine and is the founder of Plant Food Wine and 20 other restaurants worldwide. "I’ve always appreciated Matthew’s work," says the Saudi royal. "He has a singular culinary talent and his approach to plant-based dining is prescient and unrivalled. I was a fan of his long before we established our professional relationship."
Folia first launched at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in July 2018. It is available at the poolside Cabana Restaurant and for in-room dining across the property, as well as in its private event space. The food is vibrant and colourful, full of fresh dishes such as the hearts of palm ceviche with California fruit, vegetables and edible flowers; green hearb tacos filled with roasted squash and king oyster barbacoa; and a savoury coconut cream pie with macadamia crust.
In March 2019, the Folia menu reached Gulf shores, as it was introduced at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where it is served at the Bay View Lounge. Next, on Tuesday, November 1 – also known as World Vegan Day – it will come to the UAE, to the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach and the Four Seasons DIFC, both properties Prince Khaled has spent "considerable time at and love".
There are also plans to take Folia to several more locations throughout the Middle East and Europe.
While health-conscious diners will be attracted to the concept, Prince Khaled is careful to stress Folia is "not meant for a specific subset of customers. It is meant for everyone who wants a culinary experience without the negative impact that eating out so often comes with."
