September 2, 1960: Baghdad residents rally in support of Abdel Karim Qassim, the then-Iraqi premier. Qassim, who came to power in a 1958 coup, enjoyed massive support among Iraq's large Communist movement. In 1963, Qasim was overthrown, and by 1968 Iraqi Communism was almost completely crushed.
