Ramadan: Shadow sculptures

These beautiful shadow sculptures made by Bassam Al Selawi and Maysoon Masalha, permanent artists in residence at Abu Dhabi Art Hub are on display in the Pullman Deira City Centre for the month of Ramadan and for the entire month of August.

Crafted from resin to resemble a word or an image, the entire sculpture comes to life when a light is shone beneath it and the shadow in itself is a work of art.

Most of the work combines modern sculpture techniques with Arabic calligraphy (verses from the Quran) and the figure that is shown when the spotlight reveals the shadow brings the piece to life.

I am a personal fan of this work as I believe it is something refreshing in an over saturated art environment and I encourage you to go down and take a look for yourself.

Pullman Deira City Centre has a regular artist programme, showcasing the works of varying talents in their lobby space. For this particular collaboration, proceeds will raise donations for the Majid Al Futtaim Charity Foundation in the spirit of a charitable Ramadan.
