UAE weather: Clouds to persist over Eid holiday

DUBAI // The clouds that have covered the country for most of the week will persist over the Eid weekend, forecasters warned
yesterday.

Rain may affect the south of the country and the east, but heavy showers such as those over the past three days are unlikely.

“Some of the cloud, particularly in the east and the south, will become convective cloud,” said a forecaster at the National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology. “There’s a chance there will be rain, particularly in Liwa and Al Ain, as well as over the mountains.”

A long-range forecast for today, tomorrow, Friday and Saturday suggested that strong winds would blow sand across the interior of the country, lowering visibility.

Drivers are advised to take care on the roads and fishermen are urged to avoid going out to sea because of high waves.

Despite the possibility of rain, the cloud cover will not reduce temperatures, with highs of 42°C and lows of 27°C expected.

A forecaster said whether that constituted “nice” weather depended largely on individual preference.

“It depends on the person, maybe some people like the temperature hot,” he said.

Sugary teas and iced coffees

The tax authority is yet to release a list of the taxed products, but it appears likely that sugary iced teas and cold coffees will be hit.

For instance, the non-fizzy drink AriZona Iced Tea contains 65 grams of sugar – about 16 teaspoons – per 680ml can. The average can costs about Dh6, which would rise to Dh9.

Cold coffee brands are likely to be hit too. Drinks such as Starbucks Bottled Mocha Frappuccino contain 31g of sugar in 270ml, while Nescafe Mocha in a can contains 15.6g of sugar in a 240ml can.
