A lorry driver whose vehicle was pictured ploughing into a line of traffic in heavy fog this week has been arrested on suspicion of endangering motorists' lives.

Abu Dhabi Police said the man drove recklessly, ignored severe weather conditions and caused a major accident on Tuesday at 8am.

In total 44 vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the new E311 road - which is named Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road on the Dubai section and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road in the Abu Dhabi stretch.

Brigadier Ali Al Dhaheri, director general of Central Operations, said the driver put lives at risk.

“He also caused harm to the health and safety of other people, damaged their personal possessions, in accordance with Article 342 and Article 424, and did not comply with the traffic signs and directions,” the officer said.

“The suspect was detained based on the offences committed by him and a case has been opened and will be presented to prosecution."

Brigadier Al Dhaheri urged heavy vehicle drivers in particular to be cautious on heavy fog, given the ability of their vehicles to cause harm.

Heavy vehicles are banned from that road between 6.30am and 9.00am and 3pm to 6pm.

Twenty-two people were injured as a result of the accident on Tuesday.
