ABU DHABI // Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak has announced that Emirati Women’s Day will take place on August 28, marking the 40th anniversary of the founding of the General Womens Union (GWU), and honouring the role of women in the Armed Forces.

Sheikha Fatima, Chairwoman of the GWU, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, said Emirati women have proven beyond doubt their efficiency in any role assigned to them in service of the nation, including the Armed Forces, police and security.

She said enlisting women in the Armed Forces dated to the era of Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father of the UAE, and leaves a formidable legacy sustained by the President, Sheikh Khalifa, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

“On December 8 last year, we marked the silver jubilee of Khawla Bint Al Azwar Military School,” said Sheikha Fatima who praised the Emirati women who have enlisted in droves despite the fact that they were not obliged by law to do so.

“It reflects the legendary epic of loyalty to the homeland and the leadership, as well as willingness to take on national responsibility and partnership in the defence of national sovereignty, dignity and national gains,” she said.
