UAE bank waives financial obligations of fallen soldiers

ABU DHABI // A bank has agreed to waive the financial obligations of soldiers who died in Yemen.

First Gulf Bank also announced it was donating Dh5 million to the Yemen: We Care campaign.

“We are committed to supporting the families of these brave soldiers, for whom we have the utmost respect,” said managing director Abdulhamid Saeed.

“We honour the sacrifices those families have made to defend the UAE and protect the Arab world.”

He said the donation to the campaign, which is being organised by Emirates Red Crescent, reflects the bank’s commitment to support the UAE’s humanitarian initiatives. “The UAE has always been a pioneer in heading humanitarian efforts,” Mr Saeed said.

“The FGB’s donation and our decision to waive financial obligations for martyrs is our response to the UAE’s leadership’s call to support the Yemeni people at this difficult time and to reaffirm that the UAE, both leaders and people, are promoting peace and stability in the region,” he said.

Yesterday, the Dar Al Ber Society also announced it was donating Dh1 million to the campaign. Chairman Khalfan Al Mazrouie said the donation was part of “humanitarian and religious duties” to help the Yemeni people who are “experiencing emotions of grief and sorrow and in making it a mission to restore hope once again”.

Abdullah Ali bin Zayed, executive director of the society, said the organisation had given more than Dh1.9m to Yemen in total, including supporting Yemeni refugees in Somalia.

The Yemen: We Care campaign has raised more than Dh502 million since August 30.
