ABU DHABI // The UAE has announced a wide range of initiatives to accelerate the development of clean energy at home and abroad.
A number of domestic policy reforms will be implemented, including the tripling of renewable energy targets in Dubai, women’s empowerment in related fields and expansion of the annual US$4 million (Dh14.7m) Zayed Future Energy Prize.
The UAE’s renewable energy aid programme, which has allocated more than $750m to developing countries since 2013, will also be expanded, state news agency Wam said.
The announcement — made at the UN Sustainable Energy for All (SE4A) Forum — supports the organisation’s goal to double the global share of renewable energy by 2030.
“Sustainable energy is a cornerstone of our economic development goals and our foreign policy,” said Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State, chairman of Masdar and member of the SE4A advisory board.
“The UAE is committed to developing and deploying renewable energy, both domestically and internationally, to enhance energy security, ensure sustainable economic development and mitigate climate change,” he said.
“As an economy blessed with rich hydrocarbon resources, we have a responsibility to extend our energy leadership beyond hydrocarbons and to ensure the continued supply of energy to global markets.”
New commitments under the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development’s partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency were highlighted, as well as 11 projects under the $50m grant UAE-Pacific Partnership Fund, which aid Pacific Ocean small island states.
“Deployment of renewables and efficiency represents one of the most impactful focus areas for both donors and domestic reform,” said Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s permanent representative to the UN.
The UN initiative aims to bring power to 1.3 billion people currently living without energy by 2030.
The UAE was among the first countries to endorse the targets, the government said.
