Dh63m project to link power from nuclear plant to Abu Dhabi power grid

ABU DHABI // A Dh63 million project linking power generated from the UAE’s nuclear plant to Abu Dhabi’s existing power grid was approved by the emirate’s Executive Committee on Sunday.

The project aims to guarantee the efficiency and continuity of electric supply and to build four 400V overhead transmission lines at the Barakah nuclear power plant in the Western Region.

They will be linked to the two main stations in Madinat Zayed and Bab 2 and will provide a link and supply to the Abu Dhabi General Transport Company network as well as the control centre, through the transmission of 5,600 megawatts from the overall power generated at the station.

The nuclear power plant’s first reactor is expected to start operation in the coming months, followed by the remaining three over the next three years.

The initiative was part of a number of projects approved by the chairman committee Jassim Al Zaabi, including developing the electric distribution in Ghayathi and Jebel Dhanna for Dh41.5 million.

It will comprise the supply and installation of electric cables over 89km to reach the optimal use of power resources and reinforce sustainable power efficiency in new housing units in both areas.

The Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Road will be developed as part of the projects from the Falah intersection to the Qasr Al Bahr intersection for Dh109 million in an aim to ease traffic in the capital and increase the efficiency of the city’s road network to keep up with urban development.

The Corniche will also undergo a Dh22 million-maintenance operation as part of the approval, including the cultivation of green spaces and the installation of aesthetic structures, fountains, lighting and facilities to preserve the city’s cultural identity.

The projects make up part of the Abu Dhabi Plan with an overall value of Dh235 million.​
