The tolerant low-lying shrub or hedge thrives in sand and bears edible fruit. Native to South Africa, Carissa macrocarpa is known by many names, including large num-num and Natal plum. It deals well with salt-laden winds, making it appropriate for planting in the UAE. It can also be found in southern Florida and California.
A low-lying shrub or hedge, the Carissa has dark, shiny green leaves and is easy to grow. Vegetative propagation can be done by notching young branchlets, cutting them halfway through and bending down, allowing to hang limply. After the branchlets have built a callous – which takes about two months – remove and plant in sand in moderate shade.
Prune to induce the development of more fruiting tips. Plants cultivated from seeds will bear fruit within the first two years. The fruit is bright and edible, making it a great addition to any garden. Once ripe, the fruit can be eaten whole or made into pies, jams, jellies and sauces.
