Iranian teen detained over Instagram dance videos

Maedeh Hojabri was reportedly released on bail

An Iranian teenager was arrested for posting on Instagram videos of herself dancing in her bedroom.

Maedeh Hojabri, 19, had posted about 300 videos on her account, many of which showed her dancing.

On Friday, state TV broadcast a video in which Hojabri acknowledges breaking moral norms while insisting that was not her intention. It was unclear, however, whether the statement was made under duress.

According to Masih Alinejad, an Iranian activist, Hojabri was later released on bail.

The Iranian authorities have said they plan to shut down similar accounts on Instagram, while the judiciary considers blacking access to the social media site.

Iran already blocks Facebook, Twitter and other social media, though many Iranians access them through proxies and VPNs.
