Ras al Khaimah Municipality has fined 44 food outlets for flouting food safety rules during Ramadan and the Eid Al Fitr holiday by selling expired foodstuffs.
Shaima Al Tunaiji, director of the Department of Public Health and the Environment at the municipality, said inspectors carried out surprise raids on abattoirs, kitchens, supermarkets, hypermarkets and restaurants as part of a round-the-clock campaign during Ramadan and Eid.
The campaign also targeted vendors who roamed the streets during the Eid holidays, offering to perform animal slaughters away from licensed slaughterhouses in the emirate.
"No vendors were caught, which clearly indicates that the campaign succeeded in eradicating this illegal activity," said Ms Al Tunaiji.
The items found past their expiry dates, that were unfit for human consumption or imported from unknown sources have all been confiscated, while the outlets where they were discovered will face legal action for posing a risk to public health.
