DUBAI // An American salesman who confessed to importing 270 Tramadol capsules into the country was convicted by the Dubai Criminal Court of importing drugs and sentenced to a year in jail.
G N, 30, told the judge he imported the capsules for medical reasons, although he did not specify the nature of his condition.
Prosecutors charged him with importing 27 strips of Tramazen 50, a painkiller that contains Tramadol, for personal use.
Emirati S A, 26, a customs inspector, testified that he was on duty when he was made aware of a suspicious package that had been sent from India.
“It was my colleague J A who suspected the package when it passed through the X-ray. It contained capsules,” said S A. “The Ministry of Health was contacted and the package was referred to them, then it was found the capsules contained Tramadol. The recipient was contacted then and referred to police.”
G N will be deported after serving his jail term.
