It's safe to say that OJ Simpson, 71, is one of the most infamous celebrities of our time.
He was a huge American football star in the 1970s, but became infamous when he was arrested and charged with the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994. He was acquitted after a highly-publicised trial, but was found guilty of the wrongful deaths in a civil suit in 1997. Many people believe, to this day, that he committed the murders. He also served 10 years in jail for a 2007 armed robbery and kidnapping in Las Vegas.
Just days after the 25th anniversary of the gruesome double murder of which he was accused but acquitted, OJ Simpson has opened a Twitter account.
"For years, people have been able to say whatever they want to say about me, with no accountability," Simpson says via his second tweet, which is a 27-second-long video that has already had 1.82 million views. "But now I get to challenge a lot of that BS and set the record straight."
He then adds that, "more importantly", he'll also talk about fantasy football and politics via his new Twitter account, on which he already has 409,000 followers.
There are only two tweets on the account so far, both videos. In the first, Simpson says: "I've got a little getting even to do," explaining why he's started a Twitter account.
What exactly he means by this, we don't know.
Simpson only follows eight accounts, almost all sports related: he's following the NFL, the PGA Tour and The Heisman Trophy. He's also following his son Justin Simpson, and his own lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne.
His official Twitter handle is @TheRealOJ32, however it's not yet verified with a blue tick, and many fake accounts have also sprouted up. @ThaRealOJ32 has 1,359 followers, and has tweeted things like "looking for a new pair of gloves".
Simpson confirmed the new account to The Associated Press on Saturday, saying in a phone interview while on a Las Vegas golf course that it "will be a lot of fun." "I've got some things to straighten out," he added.
The fallen star has generally kept a low profile since his release from prison in October 2017, but his new Twitter profile may signal that he's about to seek out the public eye.
