Seeing is not believing

The kicker punts the American football neatly through a basketball hoop from about 50 metres away. In another clip, he kicks it into the hands of a friend leaning out of a rapidly moving car. Among the many other feats, he juggles the ball, one, two, three, four times, and then in a move nearly mimicking a bicycle kick, he smashes it through the distant posts for a clean field goal.

The YouTube video of the Norwegian phenomenon has gone viral (as so many videos seem to do these days). The kicker, Havard Rugland, has a tryout with the New York Jets in the NFL, according to Norwegian TV at least.

After an abysmal season, the Jets need all the help they can get. But a real-life tryout is wise. The video is already drawing comparisons with another YouTube clip, which showed a Golden Eagle swooping down, grabbing a child from a grassy field in a Montreal park, and carrying the little one away for several metres before surrendering its catch. That video was revealed to be a hoax in less than two days - so far, however, most media seem to believe in the preternatural accuracy of Rugland's leg. Time will tell.

Is the Norwegian a stunningly talented kicker? Do eagles snatch children from the park? Both things are possible, but not necessarily true.
