Here is your digest of what is making the headlines in the Emirates.

Heavy rain, thunder and lightning are forecast for parts of the UAE during the coming week.

The National Centre of Meteorology said stormy weather would hit parts of the country from Wednesday night until late on Thursday.

“[There will be] moderate to heavy rain in scattered areas with lightning and thunder at times, with the possibility of some hail, starting in the west on Wednesday night and extending over most regions of the country on Thursday,” the NCM said, according to the state news agency Wam.

The NCM also said winds would reach 65kph on Thursday.

Rain was also predicted in the UAE throughout the first part of the week. But the worst weather was expected to arrive on Thursday.

Dubai starts building $35bn passenger terminal at Al Maktoum Airport

Dubai has approved designs for a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport and has begun building at a cost of Dh128 billion ($34.8 billion), as the emirate boosts airport capacity to meet growing travel demand.

Once complete, Al Maktoum International Airport will have "the world's largest capacity", reaching up to 260 million passengers, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, said on X.

It will be five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport, which is ranked top globally for international passenger traffic.

It will "fully absorb Dubai International Airport’s operations in 10 years", Dubai Media Office said.

Task force to assess flood damage in UAE given one week to devise strategy

A committee established to assess damage caused by floods in the UAE held its first meeting to set plans to evaluate the condition of roads, infrastructure and dams after the country's worst storms on record.

The committee was formed by the UAE Cabinet and is led by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the state news agency Wam reported on Sunday.

The meeting was presided over by Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, and attended by members of the committee from various federal and local entities.

Mr Al Mazrouei outlined the tasks of the committee, which include assessing the damage and proposing solutions.
