King Salman of Saudi Arabia met with director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Mike Pompeo in Riyadh on Monday night.

The two men discussed relations between their countries and the latest regional developments, reported the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

The meeting was attended by the king’s son, Prince Khaled bin Salman, who is Saudi’s ambassador to the US, foreign minister Adel Al Jubeir, and head of the general intelligence Khaled Al Humaidan.

Earlier this month, Mr Pompeo said he sent a letter to Iranian Maj Gen Qassem Soleimani over Tehran's increasingly threatening behaviour in Iraq.

"What we were communicating to him in that letter was that we will hold he and Iran accountable for any attacks on American interests in Iraq by forces that are under their control,” he said.

The presence of Gen Soleimani on the front lines highlighted Tehran’s heavy sway over policy in Iraq, and comes as Iran seeks to win a proxy war in the Middle East with its regional rival and US ally, Saudi Arabia.
