Two men accused of impersonating police officers to rob victims

The Emirati pair admitted charges of kidnap and theft after stealing Dh850

Two Emirati men posed as police officers to kidnap and rob a man of Dh850, Dubai Criminal Court has heard.

Prosecutors said the pair, aged 35 and 40, conspired with a third defendant, a 34-year-old Emirati woman, to carry out the theft.

The robbery took place on February 3 this year as the victim, from Afghanistan, was walking in Bur Dubai.

The two men ordered him to get into their car after claiming he was wanted in connection with a criminal case.

They then took his wallet and two phones before driving him to a remote area and abandoning him.

The victim reported the incident to police and 10 days later the pair were arrested after officers were able to trace the vehicle’s registration.

“The older defendant admitted to plotting with the woman to use her car and con workers into believing they were officers then steal their money,” a policeman told the court.

The two men admitted charges of kidnap, impersonating an officer and theft. Their co-defendant did not enter a plea and the hearing was adjourned until June 30.
